For some (not all) oscillators,Tuning oscillators is ridiculously easy compared to nearly every acoustic instrument out there. Why do people make a big deal of it?
A: Tiny pot shafts for non-precise fine tuning
B: Poor tracking across multiple octaves
C: Unnecessarily difficult calibration process
D: Pitch drift under temperature fluctuations
Anyway, my answer is “depends” I guess. Typically tune to C when doing melodic sequencing or if I plan to add other, non modular tracks to a piece later. Sometimes I set the arpeggiator on a keyboard to play a repeating C note while I tune oscillators to that by ear, or use a small tuner. Klavis CalTrans helps ensure good tracking and easy transposition without touching tune knobs on an osc after initial tuning and calibration.
For more abstract drones and soundscapes, whatever sounds cool if a track is going to be modular only.
