I'm not entirely sure what you mean by “midi volume.” Are you referring to the ability to control the volume of a track via midi, or the velocity of the midi notes?
Typically, I only control one or two pieces of external gear, often including a groovebox with its own sequencer, to which I just send program changes. So, eight channels of midi have been sufficient for my needs. I find that less is more when playing out, and I try not to make my setup too complicated.
I also rely on the Novation Launchpad to control the Octatrack. This has been essential for my live performances, as it provides the direct control I need. It took some time to figure out the “perfect” template for both the Octatrack and the Launchpad, but it was well worth the effort. Now, I can produce and perform my live sets with relative ease.
