Your MPC 4000 should work great as a MIDI sequencer. It has good internal timing and several MIDI ports. I use an MPC 5000 which has similar capabilities and timing accuracy. I use both MIDI sync and MIDI time code. It works as both master and slave. I've synced it to a DAW and a rack mount Fostex multitrack with MTC and to other MIDI sequencers and drum machines with MIDI sync. MIDI sync is very easy to use, MTC is a little more complicated but can do more.Apologies for such a rudimentary question. There is a lot on this subject, I know, but I am struggling to boil down my options.
I have accumulated a very small number of external synths/drum machines (DFAM, TR8S, TD-3-MO), a few control surfaces (Korg SQ64, Keystep) and an MPC4000. I also have Ableton.
Basically, I want to get all the synths playing in time with each other and have a way to record at least loops, but preferably longer jams.
What are some common ways to approach this?
Should I just get an audio interface and sync it all up with my DAW? Or are there advantages to approaching this outside the box with something like the Akai Force or 1010 Blacbox?
Sorry again. I should be able to figure this out, but I have some kind of information overload.
