What do you expect a tuner to do with no input? The result is undefined. It is not a surprise that the channels will respond differently to noise and offsets in this mode.

Fortunately, the NTS-2 has a built-in signal generator. Try looping the outputs back to the inputs to see if everything functions as expected.

For the record, my NTS-2 is not loose in any way. The battery rattles a little in the holder. But a small folded paper under the cover holds it still.
Well I obviously didn't expect a jumpy offset to this extent (almost bottoming out) and in this strange cycle, but having almost no experience with hardware tuners myself, I suppose it makes sense that it could pick up subtle noise from somewhere. It just seems concerningly high for internal battery power - I can only imagine the interference a noisy USB bus might cause in comparison!

And the rattle I'm hearing is coming from the case assembly itself (even after tightening up the case screws), almost like the screws used are slightly too long for the threads. But so wait a minute... was your NTS not loose in any way, or it WAS loose until you added folded paper to fill a tolerance gap?
