I mounted it inside my rack because I didn't have 6hp to spare. If I'd had the space I would have mounted it normally to allow additional flexibility for using it with a wider range of MIDI gear. As I already had an FH-2 which happened to have handy breakouts for MIDI on the PCB, cobbling together a solution that allowed me to pair the two up without having to make space worked well for me.
It's a phenomenal expansion of Assimil8or's functionality. Since one of the intended use cases is to easily pair Assimil8or with an SP-1200, the decision to use full size DIN ports makes perfect sense. Instead of getting frustrated that a product did not provide a fully bespoke design to suit my use case, I tweaked it slightly and couldn't be happier with it. Isn't that kind of the point of modular?
